A Day at El MorroHey there! I decided to post this unfinished yet chill landscape artwork. I got gifted oil pastels for my birthday and I decided to try them out days later at an art picnic with friends. This is El Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Also known as El Morro, it's our fortress and citadel. 99% certain that if you've seen Puerto Rican ads or imagery, you have seen El Morro or las garitas (the outposts) at least. I haven't been to Old San Juan in a while because getting there is a pain with traffic and there's little to no parking. But I had a great time drawing this. It's usually scorching hot, but the area where El Morro is located is cozy and windy. Very good for flying kites.
It's been years since I've done live drawing, especially on landscapes! It doesn't look perfect, especially since this is my first time using oil pastels. But I loved the colors and the feel was very nice. I couldn't finish it because it rained like an hour and a half in and pictures weren't much help. So I am sticking to how it looks now. The most frustrating thing is that it only rained for 5 minutes then it was sunny again. But I am happy with the "end" result nonetheless. Apr 21, 2026
That is super chill! A shame you didn't get to finish it, but it sounds like you had fun trying out the oil pastels. I always find it challenging to work in a new medium. Were the pastels easy to work with?
This is actually good! And it has an old school feel to it, that reminds me of Aztec or so... and that's not a bad thing whatsoever . Seeing it, brings nice memories. You really did good on this
I bet this would be a really cool place to visit. I've seen Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida (many years ago) and that was amazing.
Oil pastels are cool. I need to practice with them. I've played around with them a little, but I always get immediately discouraged because anything I try to draw looks like something a seven year old did with their non-dominant hand
