Genderbent Boyfriends!I finally caved and decided to create a reference for the genderbent versions of Ikelia and Phomi, named Ikele and Phomis. I'll be using the shorthand GBU for genderbent universe when referring to them vs the female versions of themselves. And yes, they are still loving partners in this universe too!
I think one of the most important things about genderbending a characters is to not just change their visual gender, but to take the lore and backstory and really think about how it changes from a different perspective. These are not human characters, they have different ways of living and comprehending the world. In fact, Phomi/Phomis both live in a matriarchal society that impacts them both very differently and Ikelia's species only has female members of the species. This of course means that I can't just swap their genders and be done there.
They grew up different, with different expectations put on them. They might look similar, but you can think of them as entirely different characters. Even on the reference sheet I noted stuff down about their differences.
This impacts on their design as well. I'm currently writing up backstory for these characters and, honestly, I'm finding them much more interesting than Phomi and Ikelia. I suppose it's because I'm actually putting though in from the get-go, rather than just trying to make a cool design.
