Sky Whale - WT Part 1
As promised for like the two people who know about it, here is my whale art. There is a lot of backstory involving this so if you are interested, I’ve included it below
but otherwise, I hope you enjoy the art and the concept. I did all of these in a notebook because my iPad isn’t working, but I still plan to redraw them digitally when I fix it. Also I hope nobody saw me shoving my notebook out my window to take this photo with the sky

The whale theory, as I’ve called it, is based around one myth I heard of that I wanted to expand upon on my own, since I couldn’t find much information on it. The whale theory is also not complete and is still a work in progress, but the foundation for the theory has been set. Anyways, the original myth goes as such:
At the beginning of time, all that existed was ocean. Then, there became 7 whales (somehow). 3 of those whales are gone, disappearing without explanation, leaving 4 whales to create the rest of the world/universe as we know it. But, of the 4 remaining whales, one of them died, leaving 3 whales and an unbalanced world.
I tried to research the myth further, but I couldn’t find anything other than this information, but I felt like the concept of whales making up our universe was so intriguing that I couldn’t pass up adding my own lore. So that is essentially what whale theory is, a creative exercise for me and a fun way to learn more about my favorite marine animals, whales

Before I introduce our first whale, there’s a little more that y’all need to know. In how I’ve set this world up, there are 3 hierarchies of deities. At the very top we have the ocean, which was there since the start of it all, before the sky, land, etc etc. just infinite ocean in all directions. The ocean is an all knowing and all powerful entity, with its goals beyond our comprehension. Luckily the ocean is a relatively passive and neutral force, and damage that we perceive to be caused by the ocean is usually influenced by either the whales or the spirits. The whales are second on the hierarchy, and they themselves make up our world. I’ll be introducing each one individually. Lastly, there are spirits, which are essentially smaller cetaceans that represent other concepts that exist in our world. Also while the whales come from the creation of the ocean, the spirits are creations of the whales, and each spirit is tied to a specific whale.

So finally onto our first whale: the sky whale, based off of the humpback whale. The sky whale is mainly seen during the day, the night sky is made up of [REDACTED]. The sky whale swims around the globe, and it’s underside is what makes up the morning sky. Alongside it swims the sun spirit, based off of a bottlenose dolphin.
Overall, the sky whale is a very playful and kind deity. It enjoys visiting all of the creatures around the world, which is why it’s constantly circling it, and due to its love for them the sky whale gifted them voice/music. Essentially, the reason we can speak and sing and play are due to the sky whale. As such, performance is key in honoring the sky whale, and that is also why you can hear all the birds chirping in the early mornings.
Due to the good nature of the sky whale, it’s spirits are highly protective of it and will bring storms or bad weather if the deity isn’t worshipped or cared for properly.

And that’s essentially all the important lore I have belonging to the sky whale! In this section I did want to give extra information on humpback whales + my thought process in creating this part. I chose the humpback whales to represent the sky mainly because they are very distant travelers, which would work with an ever changing sky. Humpback whales are also known for their songs, and are said to have the most complex songs, which change every year and are passed down/learned from other whales, which I just thought was super cool and could also parallel the way that we hear the wind howl. Another cool touch is that the knobs on the whale’s nose kind of look like clouds

. I also chose the sun spirit that accompanies the sky whale to be a bottlenose dolphin because those dolphins are symbolized with positivity, in a similar way as the sun, and they also have been spotted playing and getting along with humpback whales (which is honestly adorable).•••
Anyways I hope you’ve enjoyed, and if you’ve read this far thank you so much

so if there r spirits that represent concepts, are abstract concepts like emotions embodied in certain spirits too?
