5. Monstre de Banyoles«The monster of Banyoles is a water dragon that lives on the Banyoles lake, in Catalonia. It’s a monster covered in scales and sharp spikes, so huge that it can’t fly despite its wings. It’s said that sparks fly from its eyes and its breath is so terrible that it dries the plants and makes animals and people sick.

There are many stories about it, but all of them start with the monster devouring people and their cattle. In one of them, Charlemagne heard about the monster and decided he would kill it, but he failed and the monster beat him up.

The other stories include a monk called Mero, who later on would become a Saint. In one of the stories, the monk convinces the monster to go with him to the town. There is revealed that the monster was actually vegetarian, and who were causing trouble were actually Charlemagne’s soldiers, who used the monster as an excuse to commit crimes.

In the last version of the story, the monster actually ate people and animals. It was the monk who convinced it to become a vegetarian, and then they went together to the town to show the townspeople that they no longer had to fear it.

Whichever is the real version of the monster of Banyoles, they all agree on one thing: the monster still lives on the lake, but for whatever reason, it is no longer a danger for the townspeople.»
