7. Lagarto de la Malena«The Lizard of the Malena, also known as Lizard of the Magdalene, was a dragon similar to a giant lizard that lived in a cave close to the fountain of the Magdalene, in Jaen (Andalusia). It used to steal cattle and eat the people that went to the fountain, and now there’s a statue of the dragon on the fountain to commemorate its defeat.
There are three legends about how it was defeated:
In the first legend, there was a prisoner that offered to kill the dragon in exchange for his freedom. People were so desperate that they accepted, so the prisoner asked for a horse, hot bread and a bag of powder. To defeat the dragon, he went to its cave at night and left a trail of bread from the entrance of the cave to the town church. The dragon ate the bread as the prisoner dropped it, and when they reached the square, he dropped the bag of powder instead of bread. The dragon left its guard down so it ate the powder without a second thought and exploded, freeing Jaen from its threat.
In the second version, the dragon was defeated by a shepherd that was tired of it eating his sheep. He decided to sacrifice one sheep to trick the dragon, and filled the sheep with red-hot tinder. The dragon appeared, drawn by the smell of the sheep, and burnt to death after eating it.
In the last legend, the neighbors decided to ask a knight for help to kill the monster. The knight agreed, and after thinking about how to defeat it, decided to make a mirror armor. The mirrors reflected the sunlight, blinding the dragon, which the knight used to kill it.
This stories are very similar to the Drac del Patriarca, a crocodile dragon that creeped up on the city of Valencia and was defeated by a prisoner with mirror armor.»
